Sleep Glorious Sleep!

To every parent who has ever tried to sleep train a baby, my heart goes out to you! I was lamenting in the last post about how I needed to get Vivian a place of her own to sleep. Our dear pals, Debbie and Greg, loaned us their Play-n-Pak for her to sleep in until we get her a crib. It is so wonderful to have a separate sleep space for her...except that she insisted on waking up every half hour. So, I gave in and put her back in bed with me. Grrrrr. That didn't really help much, since she was still waking up a million times every night. It just meant that I didn't have to get out of bed to pick her up.

Enough was enough! Hyrum and I had been waiting until she turned 4 months old on the 25th to officially "sleep train" her, because that is when our book said she could pacify herself. As you can see, she is clearly pacified with her fingers. (Yes, I know I'm a bad mother for putting my child on the counter top. Let's just blame my poor judgement on lack of sleep :)

In our desperation, we began the sleep training journey last Friday. So far, it's been pretty rough. Hyrum is sleeping on the couch, Savannah is waking up in the middle of the night and is tired during the day, and I think I got about 2 hours of sleep last night. But we have hope that she will figure it out soon. Until then, I need some encouragement!!

  1. I am sorry dear! Our kids didn't sleep through till about 9months to a year, but I am a pushover. Lots of changes in the house, hopefully you will find a good rhythm soon that involves you getting more sleep! I feel for you!
And kids on the counter is totally OK. They need to be up by you and see you and talk to you.
Such cute girls! Winter is coming, its darker then, hopefully that will help! I hate putting the kids to bed at 7pm with two more hours of sunlight!

  2. Tawni, You are amazing. I've been thinking about you guys and have missed you the last few weeks. Thankfully we will actually be going to church this week so we will see you again. Good luck with the sleep training. I can only imagine how frustrating it is. By the way Viv looks so cute in her bumbo. We need one of those.

  3. I am a firm advocate of the theory that the best thing for a child is a sane well rested mother. Do what you can do to get a good night sleep yourself. If that means sleeping while your baby cries, so be it. Try earplugs! You are the glue in the family and therefore the first priority.

    Good luck.

  4. I really feel for you guys, that's tough! Also,I totally agree with Allen!!! If I had it to do again, I would place my sleep much higher on the baby priority list! Earplugs, white-noise, the works. Even now with older kids, I'm a completely different mom on a lean-night's sleep. It's scary really. Anyway good luck and take care of yourselves!
